It is required that all students activate their ASU email accounts. No other email accounts will be used to communicate electronically with students. You can link your ASU account to your personal account if you choose to do so. You can do this after getting an ASURITE userID, which is all self-service. Go to the Computing Commons (about a block East of the MU). Look for the specially marked terminal on the First Floor, on the left next to the Computer Store. Sit down and subscribe! The process takes about 15 minutes and your account will be ready to use in half an hour. If you have problems, the computing site staff will be happy to assist. Course Description
This course covers the basic principles of two-dimensional design. In a sequence of hands-on exercises and projects, you'll be introduced to the concept of the picture plane, figure/ground relationships, scale and proportional transformation, patterning, composition, value, color, methods for conveying time, and spatial illusion. Using a wide variety of materials and methods you're encouraged to develop your own design vocabulary and repertoire of practical techniques. In addition to introducing formal design strategies, the course emphasizes content issues and the historical and cultural context in which works of art are produced. Regular slide lectures and critiques are structured informally to encourage dialogue and to provide you and your colleagues with an opportunity to translate visual evidence into words. Beyond the concepts and skills essential to good design practice, it is hoped that the course will open a window towards self-expression and awareness and provide you with the necessary skills/tools to help you succeed in future courses.

Course Requirements
During the whole of the semester, each student will be expected to participate fully in the life of the Design Studio. In addition to the completion of assigned projects on time, this means regular attendance, a sense of studio etiquette, and respectful and honest participation in class discussion and critiques.
A sketchbook//notebook will be required for this class as it is important that you thoroughly investigate your ideas. The initial answer isn’t usually the best solution. Having a place to freely brainstorm without committing to any one idea gives you options. Options allow you to think critically and make well-informed decisions before pursuing your final work. Sketchbooks serve as a visual journal documenting your thought process and progress. Please always bring your sketchbook to class with you and know that said sketchbook may be also used for other classes.
All returned assignments must be saved in a portfolio that will be turned in at the end of the semester. Above all, think of each assignment as an opportunity to create your best work. You will be graded on your final portfolio, the sketchbook/notebook, the over all quality of work, attendance, and thoughtful class participation.
Grading
Completing all of the assigned projects on time with a reasonable degree of craftsmanship and care, and regular attendance is the minimum expectation. Assignments will be collected following critiques; and they will then be graded and returned to you in a timely manner. Late work will automatically drop one full letter grade for each day that it is late (unless prior arrangements have been made with the instructor).
You can "re-do" any project without penalty, for a higher grade--as long as you turn the work in on time and show your best effort. You´ll have one week after the initial due date to complete the project. Top grades will be awarded for a combination of design excellence, conceptual depth, intelligent participation in discussion, and, most importantly, individual improvement.
Grading breaks down as follows:
Assignments 40% Research/Vocabulary/Quizes 10%
Sketchbook/Notebook 30% Participation/Attendance 20%
Homework/Out of class assignments, sketchbook work, readings, and worksheets will be completed outside of class and handed in at the appropriate time.
Class Critiques give you an opportunity to share thoughts and ideas that surround your own work as well as the work of your peers. Critiques allow you to see and experience various solutions of the problem assigned while creating a forum for the group to present and discuss the different outcomes. Orderly and professional participation in this dialogue is crucial in your development as a visual artist. Therefore, all students are expected to attend and take part in all class critiques.
Please note that work unavailable for critique may not be resubmitted later to improve your grade, so please bring your work to critique even if you feel that it has not reached its full potential.
The following components will be considered in assigning grades for your assignments:
1. Technical
Technique (skill with materials), problem requirements satisfied and overall level of craftsmanship
2. Conceptual
Comprehension (did the student understand ideas of the project?),communication (does project show idea of assignment?), intention (does project reflect the intentions of the artist?), Invention, originality, deep thinking
3. Aesthetic
Composition (organization of formal elements), character (individual personality, style, quality), expression (non-verbal power, affective communication
Some assignments, however, will not be subject to such an extensive review process, but are still important to the class.
Health and Safety Module Requirements
It is now required that all 100 level classes pass a Health and Safety Module. To begin, you must enroll in the new Blackboard 9 website. A “task” will be sent to your myasu account, follow the prompts to self enroll; proceed with watching the video and taking the related quiz. You must pass with an 80% to receive credit. You must repeat the test in additional CORE classes until you receive a 100%. When you achieve a 100% you will be exempt from taking the quiz again and instructed on how to take a screen capture to maintain a record of your accomplishment. Please note that this in an introduction to safety at ASU and other training sessions will be required in upper division classes as necessary for the studio you will be working in under faculty supervision. So, even though some of the material covered in this module may not seem immediately important it WILL become important as you matriculate though your BFA program.
Instructions for students:
- Students must enroll in BB9
- From the Bb homepage, click the COURSES tab 2
- Type "SOA" into the Course Search box on the upper left
- The Health and Safety module is ~3rd from top. Click the Course ID link.
- Immediately, they're asked if they want to enroll in this course.
- bingo. self-enrollment done. proceed with task.
- To take a screen capture hold apple+shift+3, listen for the shutter sound. (This takes a picture of the screen, a .png file, and places it on your desktop. You may print this and prove to me that you got 100%. Be sure to take snapshot before you close the score page, as you will not be able to access it again)
If you do not take the test, or pass the test by you will receive a notice of potential class failure in the first Academic Status Report. In order for you to access the test after you must make an appointment with me during my office hours. The test will be worth 5% of your final grade.
ASU Safety Procedures (take responsibility for your health and safety!)
Attendance Policy: 3 unexcused absences = one letter grade drop from final grade 3 partial attendance (late arrivals and/or early class departures) = 1 absence 7 or more unexcused absences will result in failing the class. Arriving more than 15 minutes after attendance has been taken and/or departing more than
30 minutes early from class will result in a partial attendance for that day. You are responsible for all assignments and material covered when you are absent. You are
encouraged to trade phone numbers with classmates for that purpose. Every effort will be made to accommodate extenuating circumstances when necessary.Cheating and Plagiarism
Cheating and plagiarism defined as by the ASU Code of Conduct as “representing the words or ideas of another as one’s own” will not be tolerated. The work you submit for this class must be yours. Cheating and plagiarism can result in expulsion from the University… and it’s lame.
For more information, please see the ASU Student Academic Integrity Policy:
Special Accommodations
Any student needing a special course-related accommodation due to a physical and/or learning impairment must bring this to the attention of the instructor with appropriate documentation within the first week of class so that learning needs can be addressed effectively. Students must contact the ASU Disability Resource Center to document a disability. Accommodations cannot be made retroactively.- http://www.asu.edu/studentaffairs/ed/drc/#https://exchange.asu.edu/exchweb/bin/redir.asp?URL=http://www.asu.edu/studentaffairs/ed/drc/
