unity

UNIT2: UNITY. Collaboration Project
Students´ pieces here

Objective:To use the principles of unity in order to construct a large composition from smaller components. The elements will agree with each other to convey a sense of unity, on in other words: oneness, togetherness, or cohesion

To experiment with collage and Mixed Media. To continue using the frame, marks and lines as personalized expressive elements (even if there are not actual lines but only implied)
Project Overview: You will partner with a classmate to create a composition based on the objects/images that you both brought to class. The piece has to achieve unity. As it is a collaborative piece, try to go bigger than 9”x12”) .
Vocabulary: Composition, unity, gestalt, collage, negative space, grouping, containment, repetition, proximity, fusion, continuity, contiguity, movement, closure, pattern, grid, balance, visual weight, symmetry, balance, scale, proportion, harmony, variety
Process:
-GATHER all the objects and images and pay attention to their nature, shape, function (if they have one), the ideas or emotions that they suggest. The theme would be defined by the objects and the narratives you create with them. Choose what is going to work well together to represent unity.
-Have a group discussion and brainstorm ways to achieve unity in your composition, considering the materials you have. Choose one or a couple of principles to be represented.
-Sketch and experiment with arranging your materials into a large piece. Try MANY different arrangements. Make more than one and decide which is most appropriate, visually and/or conceptually. Feel free not to make a rectangle as a frame. If you are doing collage, arrange the collage materials in a way that is unified and cohesive, but do not glue right away! Wait until you are sure of where do all the elements go.
-Once you get a strong idea and everything appears to be close to finished, assemble your pieces into your final composition. While working on small sections always keep the whole in mind. Take a step back and look at it. Now that it’s all together is it a unified whole or a big mess? What final changes can you make to the overall composition to really push the idea of unity with variety?
