figure/ground

UNIT3: FIGURE-GROUND RELATIONSHIPS. Project: Heroism/tragedy narrative.
Students´ pieces here

Objective: To consider the dramatic implications of different figure/ground relationships, to create a composition that conveys a narrative that deals with the concepts: heroism and/or tragedy.
The image is a cut out from black/white paper and should demonstrate three different approaches to figure ground.

Project Overview: Sketch potential images. Cut out the negative space that will become white from the black paper (or the other way around) Focus on the use of black and white, positive and negative space to convey ideas of heroism and/or tragedy.

Vocabulary: Figure, Ground, Positive shape, negative shape, vignette, balance, weight,
Materials:Black paper, White paper, scissors, x-acto knife, hard and soft pencils, glue
Process:
-First: After finding or inventing your narrative (heroism/tragedy), sketch thumbnails focusing on positive and negative space relationships. Your image has to establish these three figure/ground relationships: vignette, integrated, and alternating/ambiguous relationships.
Consider the potential of the black and white cutouts to reveal, conceal, mask...
-Second: Translate image to the paper. If you are drawing on black paper, draw with a white pencil to see your lines most readily.
-Finally: Finalize your decisions and carefully cut out your images. Make sure to test your image against a white/black background to make sure that it achieves the desired effect.
